Cesta looked up at Damien, studying the human. "Not at all, Will was talking to me about how things are now. His daughter seems good for some of the broad strokes as well." Cesta sniffs at his coffee hesitantly, "I do think I like some of what I have seen so far, it's all so close to being familiar, but not".

"I can imagine it is somewhat disorienting waking to a changed world, especially since so much time has passed." He says sympathetically. "Have you had time to read up on what histories are available?" He asks. "I have several resources available on my computer you can study, if it will help."

"I suspect Damien has far more in depth scholarly guides, probably more up to your speed. What we have here is mostly child and lazy adult level of learning," Will explains, while gesturing to the device.

Cesta sat back, looking between the human and the beastman. His eyes go back to the human. "Thank you, it is a little disconcerting. I would take any histories you may have." Cesta looked back down at his notes. "I may ask you a lot of questions. I am assuming you are more than passingly familiar in those histories. I will need to get familiar with what happened to some of the races that worked for my people."

Will smiles, and nods, "I'll leave Damien to it with you. I am not a book learned man, and he will probably be able to provide much more information than I could."

" I'm no historical expert, " Damien replies, "But to understand cultures and the artifacts they leave behind, one must have some knowledge of the histories bound to them." He looks at the notes and books that Cesta is working with. "If you don't mind, I'd like to scan your books and have an electronic copy of anything you have. I may not be a mage, but the knowledge itself is interesting."
Damien looks at the Beastman, "I'd be interested in any oral histories you might wish to share as well. You never know what might come up when you compare oral histories of one race to a written one of another race."
"One other thing comes to mind now that we are talking about histories and such." He continues, "Has anyone tried a visual scan of our lady Ezelle? I'm wondering if running her various tattoos through comparison software would turn up some more maps she might have a key to."

Cesta considers Damien's words, tapping his fingers on the table. "Normally there are a few types of slaves that were not allowed to be looked at like that, I believe she is one of them. I think we might find more there then we expect."
He turns his eyes towards Damien. "At the very least we might find more about the maps, that is a splendid idea."

Will nods, "I can see what we can do. Our histories are . . . not as easy for humans to capture, but we can see. I'll leave you two to it, though, as I have to sort a few things out." Will then heads towards the door.

Damien raises his cup of coffee to a departing Will. "Looking forward to it! Maybe you can get Trouble to help too."
He looks back to Cesta, "I'll get my equipment set up to do a scan." He says eagerly. "After we take some scans, I'll run them through my computer and see if we get any hits." He takes a drag on his cigarette, thinking out loud. "Depending on the number of symbols and what combinations there are involved, it may take some time to get any matches or possibles. I'm sure we will get quite a few." He nods to himself, confident of the possibilities. "Can you explain to me how these living keys work exactly?" He asks Cesta. "Do they hold a set number of symbols and patterns like combinations to a safe or are they some sort of cryptographic randomizer?" He continues, rambling a bit. "I'm not any kind of expert at cryptography, just cartography. I did a lot of translating of dispatches and captured documents during the War, but it was after the Code Busters did their job." He finishes off his coffee and then turns to refill it at the galley urn.

"I have been looking at some of the histories, and through my library and I may have some answers I didn't know earlier."
Cesta watched as the beastman left, then turned his attention back to Damien then turns back to his monitor. He taps in a few commands into the console in front of him. Once he confirmed what cryptology means he turns to Damien. "There are two types of keys that I have seen. The first are pre-programmed with a set number of combinations. They are genetically manipulated with the information in them. The key with them is to figure out what time period they were programmed in and what quadrant. We can use that information to determine what maps were available. It is possible some sort of scan may help us figure it out. Also, when I say a set number of combinations, it still could be a thousand different combination of maps. Also they can be wired to do a randomizer, but I am not sure how effective that would be."Cesta then sipped his drink thinking quietly to himself. He stared down at his drink. "The second type of key is more complicated. It is a combination of the genetics of the key itself, plus the use of magical spells and wards, warp and technology together. The key can open pretty much anything, a map, a lock, you could even push their body up against a retinal or thumbprint scanner and it is possible that they would break it. The only thing that it usually won't open is an actual mechanical lock that requires a key. One of the most useful parts of keys is they can walk through magical and psionic wards if their cryptography works correctly."Cesta took a deep breath, "The second type would be called universal keys in your language. They are incredibly valuable, highly sought after and I have watched Altharin houses go to war over them. They are one of the few things that can gain access to our ancient ancestor's holdings."Cesta looked up at Damien again, "I think you might have found one. The bigger news is her master isn't dead. She would have died almost immediately before Will freed her. That means he is going to come looking for her, and he is pretty powerful if he owned her."
